Last night, I watched a handful of episodes of Homicide Squad: New Orleans on Netflix and it completely changed how I think about business camera systems.
Crimes aren’t solved where they happen. They’re solved by following where people came from and go next.
Detectives from New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) weren’t relying on one camera. They were tracking movement across multiple businesses, and building a timeline piece by piece.
And here’s what stood out:
The businesses with clear, reliable camera footage weren’t just protecting themselves, they were helping solve crimes.
So what does that mean for Charleston businesses?
It means your cameras might matter more after hours than they do during your busiest day.
What Happens After You Lock the Doors Matters Most
During the day, your team is present. Customers are coming and going. If something feels off, someone notices. Outside of business hours? Your camera system becomes your only set of eyes.
This is when most incidents actually occur:
- Late-night loitering
- Parking lot activity
- Attempted break-ins
- Vandalism
- “Testing the building” behavior before a future incident
And here’s the problem… Most systems aren’t designed with after-hours visibility in mind.
The Blind Spots Businesses Don’t Think About
From what those detectives were doing, one thing became clear. They weren’t just looking at one camera; they were following movement across multiple angles and locations. They we’re logging hour after hour of combing through video clips.
Now think about your building.
Do your cameras clearly capture:
- People approaching your entrance?
- Activity in your parking lot, not just the front door?
- Vehicles entering and leaving your property?
- Side or rear access points?
Or do you just have a camera pointed at the cash register and call it a day?
Because in real-world scenarios, what happens before and after the moment matters more than the moment itself. And here’s where a lot of businesses unknowingly fall short. They have cameras, but it isn’t useable because it’s either grainy or blurry video, poor nighttime visibility, glare from lights or headlights, bad camera angles or have gaps between coverage zones.
In a real situation, if your cameras cannot identify a license plate, or the direction of movement, the footage doesn’t help you or anyone else.
In many cases, it’s not your incident, but your footage helps solve it. Last night I was happy to see the NOPD putting criminals behind bars in days because of the camera footage. Not crime taking months or years to solve.
That’s a different level of value.
Why This Matters More Right Now
Summer is upon us Charleston. We’ve been moving into longer days and later nights. This means that businesses are staying open later, foot traffic increases, parking lots stay active longer and more happens outside your building hours.
The extended activity window means more opportunity for things to happen and more importance on capturing what you don’t see in real time.
The Real Takeaway
Having the right visibility at the right times is the goal. As a business owner and member of the CHS community you want to know what happens before your team arrives, after your doors close, and the activity outside of your immediate space.
Your camera system should help answer questions…not create more of them.
If your business is located in the Charleston metro area and you’re not fully confident in what your camera system captures, especially outside your business hours, it may be time to take a closer look.
