Over a year and a half ago, I did a blog highlighting 8 rewards of Hosted VoIP for your business. Since writing that blog, I’ve learned that consumers still aren’t 100% clear on what Hosted VoIP means. Don’t get me wrong, the word VoIP is known in the business industry, but it’s not really understood. Lots of companies offer “VoIP” services. But do you really know what you’re getting for your company? Let me break it down!
Hosted
Let’s start with the word hosted. When you purchase hosted VoIP services for your business, the hosted part of that service means that the company you’ve selected, manages and maintains the hardware and software that supports the VoIP services. This means their servers are hosting the service that the end users can now use their telephone via an internet connection. Hosted VoIP became more and more popular when business realized they no longer had to invest in and maintain their own telecommunications infrastructure.
VoIP
Now the word VoIP. VoIP is short for Voice over Internet Protocol. What this means is that I can pick up my traditional business desk phone, and because of the ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to my telephone, I can make and receive phone calls over a network connection. Ethernet “is a family of wired computer networking technologies commonly used in local area networks (LAN), metropolitan area networks (MAN) and wide area networks (WAN).”
Hosted VoIP
Why internet vs. ethernet? When the words Hosted VoIP are used together, Hosted VoIP does use the Internet. But when the word VoIP is used stand alone, it is just referencing the utilization of the network IP infrastructure. We use the word ethernet, instead of internet.
